As we work to continually improve our offering of apparel and accessories, we are excited to announce the addition of Sportful to our line up of brands. A relative newcomer in Italy's long cycling history, with its first cycling apparel arriving in 1985, Sportful quickly gained prominence as the quality of its garments garnished respect.
It all gathered steam with the advent of producing kit for what was to become one of the most iconic sports teams of all time, with not just an unrivalled palmares, but a style and presentation that took cycling to a whole new level. We speak, of course, of Mapei, a team which won 653 races and dominated professional cycling for a decade.
They were the biggest, richest and without a doubt the most colourful team cycling had ever seen. In the end after ten years, only the Tour de France and Milan-San Remo eluded them. And the 1.2.3 finish at the 1996 Paris Roubaix remains a standout if controversial moment in sport. Backed and funded by Mapei owner and cycling fanatic Giorgio Squinzi and led by team manager Alvaro Crespi, it was the team everyone wanted to be a part of. A huge part of that success was also the coach, mentor, father figure and now sadly missed Aldo Sassi. Respected and admired by all, he also established the Mapei centre, which remains a centre of sporting excellence to this day.
And what a role call of riders. Museeuw, Rogers, Evans, Bartoli, Bettini, Friere, Rominger, the list goes on and on. So many careers started there or reached the heights there. Fast forward to 2017 and Mapei has somewhat returned to cycling, and indeed was a great supporter of the 2010 Road Worlds in Melbourne and Geelong and the Australian team. And the Mapei kits have acquired a cult status among the cognoscenti in cycling circles.
This then is the pedigree of Sportful and thrilled we are to add them to our collection. It seems a perfect fit to join with Cafe du Cycliste, Assos, Fizik, Kask, POC, Entrix and all the other great brands we are proud to stock.
