We the Tifosi are spoilt for choice when it comes to what Grand Tour to watch in the cycling world in July. We are all currently watching the Tour de France as the heads of state battle it out in the mountains, but we want to talk about another Grand Tour we have just finished watching and enjoyed.
We talk of course of the Giro D'Italia Internazionale Femminile, the Giro Rosa. As well as a welcome return to the stunning roads of Italy, there was some really excellent racing in a hard fought battle. While the strong and well drilled Boels Dolmans team set the tone and headlined the race after a classy TTT win in the opener, a strong cast threw everything at the team and eventual winner Anna Van Der Breggen through a week of heat, hills and all out sprints.
The maglia rosa was attacked at every turn and it seems pretty clear to us that womens cycling has well and truly come of age. We think it is time for some longer stages to reflect the fitness and skills of the womens world tour. Having had the privilege of watching a succession of great riders such as Tracy Gaudry, Anna Wilson, Liz Taylor (nee Tadich), Rochelle Gilmore and others lay the foundations over the past twenty years, it feels to us that we are getting closer to a critical mass that will provoke another round of explosive growth in the sport.
A special note of thanks to our friends at Cyclingtips for the coverage and photos as well. Chapeau guys and we are looking forward to more!
